ABOUT DOCTOR

Dr. Krishnendu Nandi is a Vitreo Retinal surgeon with over 14 years of experience in the field of ophthalmology. He was previously associated with Sankara Nethralaya as a Vitreo-Retinal Consultant. Currently, he is a senior Vitreo Retinal Consultant in B B Eye Foundation VIP. Dr Nandi is also a Co Director of Netralayam Eye Hospital Pvt Ltd.

Dr Nandi completed his MBBS and received Gold medal for graduating at the top of his class in 2000. After completing his Masters of Surgery (Ophthalmology) in 2006 at one of the best colleges of the country, Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Medical College, Kolkata; Dr. Nandi joined as VitreoRetinal Research and Clinical Fellow in Sri Bhagwan Mahavir Vitreo Retinal Services, Medical Research Foundation, Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai in 2007. At Sankara Nethralaya Chennai, he received training from renowned world class experts of Ophthalmology such as Dr Lingam Gopal, Dr Tarun Sharma and Dr Pramod Bhende.
Dr. Nandi was privileged to be awarded the muchcoveted Gold Medal during his tenure as a Vitreo Retinal fellow at Sankara Nethralaya in 2009. Dr Nandi is a strong believer of team work. He has always taken a keen interest in passing on his knowledge to others and has personally trained numerous trainee Vitreo-Retinal surgeons in Sankara Nethralaya and B B Eye Foundation. Dr. Nandi not only practices evidence-based medicine, but is also a major contributor to the field of Vitreo Retina, nationally and internationally. He has published over 20 articles in different index journals in the field of Retina and has also presented more than 50 papers at national and international levels.

Retina

The retina is a thin layer of tissue that lines the back of the eye on the inside. It is located near the optic nerve. The purpose of the retina is to receive light that the lens has focused, convert the light into neural signals, and send these signals on to the brain for visual recognition.

The retina processes light through a layer of photoreceptor cells. These are essentially light-sensitive cells, responsible for detecting qualities such as color and light-intensity. The retina processes the information gathered by the photoreceptor cells and sends this information to the brain via the optic nerve. Basically, the retina processes a picture from the focused light, and the brain is left to decide what the picture is.
